Print Matters summer school: Thin Ice Press

What does it mean to think about matter and materiality through the medium of letterpress printing?

We invite scholars of matter, materiality and/or material culture (broadly conceived) in any discipline, and at any career stage (including graduate students), to apply to our 2025 summer school: Print Matters. Supported by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Print Matters Summer School will offer participants a unique opportunity to advance their research, develop new skills in letterpress printing, and engage with questions of matter, materials or things and their affordances in theory and practice.

Print, Place and Community

Join us at The Guildhall, in the beautiful Riverside Lounge, for a lively panel event discussing the links between place, print and community. The conversation brings together David Armes, of Red Plate Press, Kathy Davies of the British Library, Nick Hand of the Department of Small Works, Helen Smith, of the University of York and Thin Ice Press, and Helen Williams, of Northumbria University. The group will talk about these ideas in theory and practice, with lots of time for audience discussion, questions and reflection.

One Year in North Yorkshire (One Day in May)

An afternoon of map-based art-activism highlighting the ongoing need to support victims of sexual violence. Inspired by the iconic work of Suzanne Lacy which brought about great changes in the 1970s, visitors are invited to place a stamp on a map of North Yorkshire to acknowledge the 1,436 reported incidents over the past year.
